Explanation To Books Marie Antoinette: The Portrait of an Average Woman
Life at the court of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette has long captivated readers, drawn by accounts of the intrigues and pageantry that came to such a sudden and unexpected end. Stefan Zweig's Marie Antoinette: The Portrait of an Average Woman is a dramatic account of the guillotine's most famous victim, from the time when as a fourteen-year-old she took Versailles by storm, to her frustrations with her aloof husband, her passionate love affair with the Swedish Count von Fersen, and ultimately to the chaos of the French Revolution and the savagery of the Terror. An impassioned narrative, Zweig's biography focuses on the human emotions of the participants and victims of the French Revolution, making it both an engrossingly compelling read and a sweeping and informative history. "Certainly no one can arise unmoved from the reading of this powerful work." -- The New Republic "Excellent biography." -- The New York TimesItemize Books In Favor Of Marie Antoinette: The Portrait of an Average Woman

An amazing book and biography, like most of Zweig's work. He is so talented, that you finish the book feeling like you personally know Marie-Antoinette. A great yet instructive read.I read this when I was fourteen. It was my first proof-based biography (not the embellished stories of *great* people written to inspire young readers) and it opened my eyes.
A recent proliferation of novels has romanticized the image of Marie Antoinette. Writers have focused on the wide-eye innocence of her childhood, her early days as Queen and, in general, have glamorized her person. Surrounded by the veil of myths, touched by the force of a very real drama, Marie Antoinette remains the most popular queen of France and perhaps even Europe. Zweigs biography doesnt romanticize or glamorize Marie Antoinette. In fact, he states clearly in the Introduction that Marie
Excellent book, love the writing. The Afterword was particularly good and perhaps one should consider reading first? Although I have read extensively about the revolution, this is my first book specifically about Marie Antoinette and one gains a new appreciation of what she experienced during her life. This is an unjudgemental account of an average woman who had an extraordinary life.
A fascinating account of one of the most critical periods of French history. Marie-Antoinette proved childish and arrogant for much of her life, until it was too late to save herself. Her final days hardened her to the point of becoming a true queen, but it was too little, too late. Also, the inability of Louis XVI to take a single decision seems responsible for many of its failures. A good read, though a bit long at times
Marie Antoinette is one of historys most famous queens. Yet, Stefan Zweigs classic biography of this queen tells us that if it was not for the French Revolution Marie Antoinette would most likely be forgotten in history. She would have been like many other French queens that came before her. Stefan Zweig also states that Marie Antoinette was neither a great woman nor a woman who deserved to be hated by the Revolution. Instead, Marie Antoinette was just an average woman who was thrust into the
Fantastic biography, and, believe it or not, fantastic person.
