As this novel begins - in 1800 - Richard Bolitho has just been promoted to Rear Admiral in the Royal Navy. He takes command of a squadron of 4 ships of the line, two frigates and a sloop and joins a naval task force blockading the western coast of Denmark and northern Holland. Tsar Paul I of Russia is toying with the idea of allying with Napoleon in his war against England, and in doing so, he plans to bring in all the Scandinavian countries on the side of Napoleon.As this novel extends into 1801, it ultimately brings Bolitho and his squadron into participation in the Battle of Copenhagen, one of Horatio Nelson's major victories in the war against the French and their allies.
This novel brings back many of the characters that we have known in previous novels of the series: Rupert Seton, brother of Bolitho's late wife; Thomas Herrick, who has served as Flag Captain before under Bolitho; Adam Pascoe, nephew of Bolitho; Hugh Bolitho, deceased brother of Bolitho, who seems to continue to exert his influence over event in Bolitho's life.
This is yet again a great addition to Kent's Bolitho series. All of the novels in this series, taken together, place Kent very clearly in the ranks of C. S. Forester and Patrick J. O'Brien.
