I took me forever to work up the courage to read this book because I accidentally read a review with a HUGE spoiler that made me doubt if it was worth reading. Even just the title filled me with foreboding. But I read it, and I loved it, and its worth the read, and Im glad to be back into these books. :DPicket was fantastic in this one! In light of his attitude in the first book, it was really cool to see him moving beyond that as a capable leader working with his own elite squadron, theS. D. Smith steps up his writing game even another notch with the second book of the Green Ember series. Our hearts fell with sadness and flew with hope by turns as he led us through this story. We see the characters developed and grow in maturity. S.D. Smith writes so well that I can see the scenes vividly in my mind, and the emotion is palpable. Our family cannot wait for the third book--it will be a hard wait.

The second book in S.D. Smiths #rabbitswithswords series is an engaging story. It's children's literature with a good dash of complexity so that adults can thoroughly enjoy novel. It's similar to The Chronicles of Narnia in that all ages can enjoy the story. Well done S.D. Smith! Write that third book!
I feel a little bad giving this book only 4 stars. I wanted to love it, and my kids loved it - they would give 5 stars :) But for myself, I would have to give about a 3.5. I have read many, many books aloud to my children and honestly I can't put this one up there at the top of the list (I reserve my 5 star ratings only for the very cream of the crop). I can't quite put my finger on what I didn't love about it, except that I didn't find the writing style especially engaging to read aloud.
Ember Falls begins a little later than where The Green Ember ended. Heather and Picket are settled into their rolls as part of the Mended Woods cause leaders. There are many twists and turns that will keep you reading far past bedtime. There is loss of some beloved characters because there is a war, and war is never kind. Like it's predecessors, The Green Ember and The Black Star of Kingston, Ember Falls is a story woven together with love, loyalty, and courage. This is a must read if you love
