From Haunted Houses Henry Wadsworth LongfellowI discovered the beauty of Kate Mosses writing when I read The Taxidermists Daughter. That book quickly became one of my very favourites. The Gothic elements, the British Marshes, the darkness in the peoples soul. My search to read more of her work brought me to thisA lot of stories in this collection were from when Kate Mosse was a younger writer and before she developed her full writing style. I think this is part of why I couldn't really get into the stories. The idea was good but the writing didn't click with me.
Just finished this! Absolutely loved it- very atmospheric and enchanting reading- will keep this safe on my shelf for a re read in the future- Wonderfully crafted short stories - of which I am not normally a fan- I gave it a go because of the authorSo glad I picked it up!
A collection of exquisitely atmospheric tales inspired by my native Sussex was certain to strike a sentimental chord. There is however an intrinsically half-baked feel about each story; the central ideas are a little hackneyed and repetitive, and the overall collection lacks rigour. But that definitely does not go to say that this wasnt a wonderfully immersive read. Unoriginal and uninteresting. Might be alright to read as individual stories over a long period of time but a whole book of them was boring. Some were not even stories which would be fine if beautiful or striking prose but rather pedestrian. I did like like the winter ghosts either. That is basically just a longer version of one of these stories.
A really sweet, beautiful book. I really enjoyed Kate Mosse's Winter Ghosts book, and so I pick up this book feeling it would be a good read. And I wasn't disappointed! What I enjoyed about Winter Ghosts was the slow, lyrical pace of a compelling hauntingly beautiful story, touched with so much sadness. Now The Mistletoe Bride strives for the same thing, and it does achieve this. Of course, this is a book of short stories so you don't get the depth or the detail of Winter Ghosts. But you are
DNF @ 53%I don't really go for anthologies but I decided to give this a go as it IS Kate Mosse. I enjoyed The Drowned Villiage and I found the authors note in between stories lended a nostalgic and sentimental feel to the collection. Nonetheless, I'm just not in the mood to finish this right now. I might pick it up in the future but I think I'll read The Burning Chambers first.
