LOVED this book. It was such a delicious read. And Julia Lambert is a completely unforgettable character. I could have continued reading her story for another 1000 pages. The story follows the rise of a theatre (stage) star - Julia - and is told from her point of view and it's so fun to watch her 'perform' her way through life, through affairs, through motherhood, and watch (sometimes with shock, sometimes with awe) as she manipulates those around her, and the entire time you have this uneasy
The tragedy of life is that sometimes we get what we want.(This is a good one, about real-life and make-believe and which one is which. Which one is which? And there you have it, Maugham does it again.)
Sometimes a bit overplayed, but oh so lovely. Maugham, the master of beautiful prose. And theatre. What could be better? All's fair in love and theatre. There are moments when you could kill Julia - the boy, I mean, the boy?! - but oh you fall in love with her and have a love-hate relationship. Not all writers manage to make the reader feel so much for the characters. And for this, Mr Maugham, I salute you.
Somerset Maugham at his best! I have read several of his novels and most of his short stories so far, and this book is one of his best of his post war novels. Everything that you could wish for is there; it is exciting, thoughtful, interesting, funny and still very deep going. Theater" is an enjoyable, insightful, and honest portrait of a woman and an artist.
