Infected by his first lover while at University in England he dies in the revolution only to be resurrected much to his shock. The vampire attributes are classic ones and get him out of many close calls with rogues of the period. Not prone to violence the gentleman is devastated when he finally does kill but gradually learns to use his talents in as moral ways as circumstances in an unjust world allow.
If there's such a thing as Vampire Light this would fall into that category. Not erotica like Rice nor as violent as Yarbro but equally skilled in historical depiction and dialect. More like historical romanticism with vampire adventures.

A very cheeky tale of the origins of vampires, including some side charcaters like friends of the author Bram Stokes, and other characters such as Jack the Ripper. Very cleverly written.4 of my favorite books of all time collected in one place. I never get enough of reading these, the historical fiction off the revolutionary war from the side of the loyalists, the old school vampire story, everything in this series I love it all.
This is a four book in one compilation. The first book takes place mostly before he's a vampire and is quite a bit slow. Once he becomes a vampire towards the end of the book things get much more interesting.The following books were really quite great. It was really a unique take on vampires not because they were physically different but more because instead of being alone dark knight blah blah soo much pain, it was a vampire with a living supportive family. I tripped across this omnibus in a friend's house, started it out of curiousity, and promptly devoured the whole book in just a few readings. I really enjoyed this. Watching Jonathan try to cope with his life as a vampire, keep himself and his family safe, it was a fantastic read.
Likeable characters, although the story kind of jumped the shark in the last book. I read the kindle version and there were some typos earlier on, but fewer later on.
